Rahima's Return to School

Rahima’s Return to School

Barishal District

When Rahima Khanom’s father passed away, the twelve-year-old left school to help her mother earn a living. For two years, she sold vegetables in the local market – carrying baskets, skipping class, forgetting how to write her own name.

Then a VOSD field officer told her mother about a new learning centre that had opened just ten minutes from their home. It was a second-chance education program – designed specifically for children like Rahima who had dropped out, fallen behind, or been forgotten by the system.

Today, Rahima is seventeen. She completed her second-chance education in three years, sat for her Grade 8 national exam, and is now enrolled in a local secondary school. She wants to become a teacher.

“I thought my life was finished. Now I teach my younger brother to read every night. I want to be a teacher so no child has to leave school like I did.”

– Rahima, 17
Fatema's Journey to Independence

Fatema’s Journey to Independence

Chandpur District

In 2015, Fatema joined a VOSD savings group at her neighbor’s insistence. She had no income of her own – her husband’s earnings from daily labor barely covered food. She could not read or write, and she had never handled money before.

Through the group, she learned to sign her name, count savings, and manage a small ledger. After six months of regular participation, she qualified for her first micro-credit loan of Tk. 10,000. She bought three goats.

Today, Fatema owns eleven goats and a poultry farm with over 200 birds. She repays her loans on time, has sent both her children to school, and recently became the chairperson of her savings group. She trains new women who join.

“I used to have no voice in my home. Now my husband asks me before buying anything. My daughters will never live like I did.”

Saving Sania

Saving Sania

Barishal Sadar

When Sania was eighteen months old, she weighed only six kilograms. She cried constantly, refused food, and her mother had begun to fear the worst. A neighbor suggested they visit the local VOSD Community Nutrition Centre.

The Centre’s Community Nutrition Organizer weighed Sania, recorded her measurements on the growth chart, and immediately enrolled her in the food supplementation program. She was severely malnourished – one of thousands of children VOSD screens every month.

Over the next six months, Sania received nutrient-dense food packets, monthly growth monitoring, and regular follow-up visits. Her mother learned to prepare balanced meals from locally available vegetables. Today, Sania is a healthy, energetic four-year-old who runs to the centre to say hello.

“I did not know what was wrong with my daughter. The nutrition centre saved her life. Every mother in my village now goes there.”

The Pond That Came Back to Life

The Pond That Came Back to Life

Barguna District

For over a decade, the village pond had been abandoned – clogged with silt, overgrown with weeds, useless. The fishermen who once earned their living from it had migrated to the cities. Kamal and his family were among the few who stayed behind.

In 2016, VOSD began a pond re-excavation program in the area. Kamal was trained in modern fish cultivation methods, received HYV fingerlings, and was given technical support from VOSD’s fisheries officers. He joined a fishermen’s group and started cultivating fish with twelve others.

Today, the pond produces over two tonnes of fish every year. Kamal’s income has nearly tripled. He no longer worries about his family’s meals and has started sending his daughter to a private school. Twelve families now depend on the pond for their livelihoods.

“The pond was dead. We thought it was gone forever. Now it feeds our children every day.”

A Home After the Storm

A Home After the Storm

Bhola District

When Cyclone SIDR tore through the southern coast in 2007, Ayesha and her family lost everything – their home, their livestock, and their only means of earning a living. For three months, they lived under a makeshift tarpaulin shelter in a crowded relief camp.

VOSD’s disaster rehabilitation team enrolled her family in the rural housing program, supported by CONCERN-Bangladesh. Within six months, they had a new, disaster-resistant house built on raised ground – designed to withstand future cyclones and tidal surges.

Today, Ayesha is a community leader. She is part of a disaster preparedness committee that trains other families on how to prepare for the next storm. “We will never be helpless again,” she says.

“We lost our home twice – once to the cyclone, once to the flood that followed. The third time, VOSD gave us a home that could not be taken away.”

Rashed's Second Chance

Rashed’s Second Chance

Barishal

Rashed dropped out of school at fifteen. With few skills and no connections, he spent his days idling on street corners in Barishal. His family had given up hope that he would ever find work.

A VOSD outreach volunteer told him about the newly opened Technical Training Institute. Rashed enrolled in a six-month computer operations course – one of five programs offered, alongside digital marketing, graphic design, sewing, and driving.

Within a month of completing the course, Rashed found work as a computer operator at a local business. Today he earns Tk. 15,000 a month – enough to support his parents and save for his younger brother’s education. Over 1,200 students have graduated from the same institute since it opened in 2025.

“I used to think I was stupid. VOSD showed me I just needed a chance. Now my little brother wants to be like me.”

– Rashed, 19

These are just six of millions of stories. Every one of them began when someone decided that a village, a family, or a single child was worth investing in.
